City of Humboldt and the Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee provide an update on the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos tribute projects

Posted: April 2, 2026

HUMBOLDT, SK — The Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee (“the committee”) is providing an update on the projects aimed at honouring the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos in advance of the anniversary of the tragic bus crash that occurred on April 6, 2018.

Progress is continuing at the crash site, where the asphalt work for the parking lot and pathways tender has been awarded and will take place this year. This work represents an important step in ensuring the site is respectfully developed and accessible for those who wish to visit and reflect. In October 2024, site preparation began with earth moving, creation of pathways, and a sitting area.

Phase 2 of the project will focus on a monument in honour of the 16 who lost their lives and the 13 others forever impacted. The Memorial site is located 170 km northeast of Humboldt at the intersection of Highway 35 and 335 near Tisdale

Tribute Centre in Humboldt
The City of Humboldt is continuing its work with the newly formed Rec-Create Committee, a community-driven initiative focused on planning a future recreation facility. While the original Tribute Centre project, intended as a dedicated facility to honour the 2017-18 Broncos team, did not secure a significant construction grant, the vision for a meaningful community space remains.

Still in the planning stages, the vision for the facility includes incorporating tribute elements that reflect the outpouring of support Humboldt received from around the world in the weeks and months following the tragedy.
“Eight years later, we continue to carry the memory of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos with us in everything we do,” Mayor Rob Muench said while reflecting on the significance of this work. “These projects are about more than remembrance; they are about creating spaces where families, residents, and visitors can reflect, heal, and feel connected.”

The City of Humboldt remains committed to supporting these initiatives to ensure all memorial elements are handled with care, respect, and intention.

Anyone wishing to volunteer or contribute financially to these projects can do so by visiting the Humboldt Broncos Tribute Campaign website: https://broncostributecampaign.com/.
