Mayor Muench proclaims Truth and Reconciliation Week in Humboldt

Posted: September 23, 2025

At the Regular Meeting of Council held on Monday, September 22, Mayor Muench proclaimed the week of September 22 to September 26, 2025, as “Truth and Reconciliation Week” in the City of Humboldt.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada called for a national day to honour survivors of residential schools, to remember the thousands of children who did not survive, and to ensure the public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

The Federal Government of Canada has designated September 30th as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the date that coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which has become a symbol of remembrance to honor Indigenous children forced to leave their families to attend residential schools.

The City of Humboldt is committed to fostering relationships built on respect, understanding, and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The proclamation encourages all residents to take part in commemorating the history and legacy of residential schools and to reflect on their lasting impacts.
