Layne started playing hockey when he was just 3 years old. At that time, in our small town, novice and prenovice were combined. He was playing with some kids that were 7 and 8 years old. That is what pushed him at such a young age to skate faster and learn how to play hockey like the "big boys" did. His love for the game grew from there.
Layne played minor hockey in Colonsay until 2010. He also spent many hours at the local rink public skating and striving to get better.
Then the driving began........
He joined the Clavet Cougars Atom Tier One for one season and then played for the Warman Wildcats Peewee AA. Practices were as much as an hour and half away but Layne never complained. In 2012 he tried out for the Humboldt Peewee AA his second year and made the team. He continued his hockey in Humboldt playing for the Bantam AA team in 2013 and 2014.
When hockey seasons ended he played spring hockey until summer. Summers were Layne's only down time and he spent them boating, wakeboarding, surfing, quadding and spending time with family. A much needed break. By the time August rolled around he was ready to get back on the ice.
In 2015 Layne found himself awaiting the WHL Bantam draft and was proud to be selected 40th overall in the second round of the draft by the Medicine Hat Tigers.
In the fall of 2015 he moved away from home to Prince Albert where he remained for two years playing for the Prince Albert Mintos AAA Midget team.
In August of 2017 he moved to Medicine Hat where he played pre season games. In October he was sent back to play with the Jr A Humboldt Broncos. Although he was disappointed to leave Medicine Hat he was happy to be back in Humboldt. A place he considered home.
Layne played in Humboldt until April 2018.
Layne still carries fond memories of his years playing hockey, a career he is very proud of. He still laces up his skates once in a while and can "top shelf" and stick handle like a pro. With time, practice and resilience he may be able to play the game he once loved so much again.
"Just for fun now, but that's ok too"
