Humboldt, SK – The City of Humboldt is aware of wildlife that have made their home within City Limits. The city has been in consultation with Saskatchewan Conservation Officers regarding the presence of these animals.
As winter conditions intensify, with harsh cold temperatures and deep snow, wildlife often seeks shelter within the city, foraging on shrubs and looking for refuge from the elements and predators. As a result, residents may observe an increase in wildlife sightings in certain areas. While this provides unique opportunities to appreciate nature up close, it is important to follow safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of both humans and animals.
Safety Considerations for Residents:
To minimize risks associated with increased wildlife activity, the City of Humboldt advises residents to keep the following safety measures in mind:
- Maintain a Safe Distance: Deer and moose, while often appearing docile, can become aggressive if they feel threatened or cornered.
- Please DO NOT FEED the Animals: Bird feeders can be a source of food, they attract deer and moose. Avoid approaching or attempting to feed them.
- Be Cautious While Driving: Wildlife crossings may become more common, particularly during early morning and evening hours. Reduce speed and stay alert, especially in areas near parks and green spaces.
- Secure Garbage and Food Sources: To prevent attracting wildlife into residential areas, ensure garbage bins are properly secured and refrain from leaving food outside.
- Leash Pets and Avoid Confrontation: Unleashed pets may startle or provoke wildlife, leading to dangerous encounters. Always keep pets leashed and under control in areas where wildlife sightings are common.
- Report Concerning Behavior: If wildlife exhibits signs of aggression or distress, report the sighting to local animal control or wildlife authorities rather than attempting to intervene directly. Contact your local conservation officer, call the Turn In Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) line at-1-800-667-7561.
The City of Humboldt remains committed to maintaining a safe and sustainable environment for all. By respecting wildlife and adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure a peaceful coexistence between our community and the animals that share our space.
