Statement from
The City of Humboldt on
HUMBOLDT GOLF COURSE OPERATIONS
Humboldt, SK – In December 2022, the Humboldt Golf Club (“HGC”), an independent volunteer board that oversees the management and operation of the Humboldt Golf Course, appeared as a delegation at a Special Meeting of City Council. At that time, the HGC advised they were experiencing financial difficulty and requested that the City of Humboldt (“the City”) provide the financial support necessary to ensure that the golf course would open in the Spring of 2023.
The golf course has existed within the community for over 75 years, initially as a 9-hole golf course and then by 2000 as an 18-hole golf course. The City owns the land that the golf course sits upon and has a lease agreement with the HGC to provide all golf operations at the course. All golf course buildings, improvements, and equipment necessary for golf operations are the property of the HGC and have been funded from the HGC operations.
In response to the HGC’s immediate financial concerns that risked the course not opening in 2023, as well as to identify any ongoing financial issues, City Council provided conditional funding of $130,000 and created the Humboldt Golf Course Governance Committee (“the Committee”). The committee, made up of members from City Council and the HGC, has been meeting approximately monthly to consider options that would keep the golf course operational past 2023.
The City will continue to work with the Committee to assist HGC with the hope of achieving a successful 2023 season, as well as finding solutions to financial matters necessary to ensure that the golf course continues to be the recreational and economic attraction that it is for our community and for the region.
