The Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee has been working diligently to determine the most appropriate Humboldt Legacy Project that will memorialize and honor those involved in the tragedy of April 6th, 2018.
The committee is comprised of members of the 2017-2018 Broncos Families, Humboldt Broncos Board members, Humboldt Public Art committee members and City Council.
“We have the right people sitting around the table, each one contributing unique ideas and resources to bring this legacy project to fruition. Yet, there’s plenty of preliminary work to be done before an absolute decision is made in terms of what that might be, exactly,” said Carol Brons, a representative of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Families.
There are many steps, and hurdles, that the committee has yet to overcome. First and foremost is determining what should be built.
“The general sense from the committee is a desire to build some sort of facility or structure that will respectfully honor everyone involved in the tragedy, yet serve as a place that will benefit our community for years to come, ” said Mayor Muench, Chairman of the Memorials Committee.
The City of Humboldt has engaged DCG Philanthropic Services to provide a feasibility study. This means DCG will assist the committee in reaching out to stakeholders to determine what type of facility or structure is most appropriate.
Additionally, the Committee continues to be involved with reviewing and coordinating the many items that were donated in the days and months following the tragedy. At the Regular Council Meeting held on January 27, 2020, City Council approved the hiring of a temporary data entry clerk to digitize and catalogue all of the items that have been received since April of 2018. There are approximately 7,000 items that will be carefully logged and stored until such time the committee can determine how to properly share the many messages of support, hope and inspiration.
Representatives of the Broncos Families have been working with the Ministries of Highways and Infrastructure to develop a suitable area near the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 that will eventually accommodate a permanent Highway Memorial. The Committee would like to thank all those that have visited the current Highway memorial, for helping to maintain the area, and respecting the memorabilia that remains there while a definitive plan is being established. The public’s cooperation and patience is appreciated as the committee continues their work to develop a vision for the Highway Memorial Project.
