In Honour of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos

“It’s a great day to be a Bronco, Gentlemen.”
~ Darcy Haugan ~

On April 6th, 2018, the Humboldt Broncos Junior “A” Hockey Club was involved in a tragic collision on their way to a playoff game against the Nipawin Hawks when the bus they were travelling in collided with a semi-trailer truck at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335, north of Tisdale, Saskatchewan. The collision resulted in the tragic loss of 16 lives and will have an everlasting traumatic effect on the 13 who survived. In that moment, the world’s attention turned to Humboldt. Thousands of people around the world could relate to the tragedy. To this day, we continue to witness compassion, resilience, and strength in magnitudes that we could not have imagined.

We thank you and everyone who has reached out to us with your thoughts, prayers, and support.

Thursday, April 6th, 2023, was the 5th anniversary of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos tragedy. The City of Humboldt, in collaboration with representatives of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Families, prepared tribute videos to honor the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos and all those impacted.

The Elgar Petersen Arena was open to the public to come and go as they wished to pay their respects and reflect from 4:45 pm to 5:30 pm. During this time, the  compilation of videos were played on the Jumbotron for those who choose to attend. Simultaneously, the video playlist was published on the City’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/CityofHumboldt/. At around 4:50 pm, the approximate time that the tragedy occurred, the bells at St. Augustine Church were tolled 29 times.

Thank you to all who took a moment to remember.

Below is the tribute video compilation.

With tragedy comes some good. Many awards, scholarships and bursaries have been created in memory of those who lost their lives.

Hockey Gives Blood – The Dayna Brons Honorary Award

From the Hockey Gives Blood website:

“Hockey Gives Blood was founded in 2018 by former hockey players, all of whom were seeking to do more for the Hockey Community.

Hockey Gives Blood is a non-profit society that has partnered with the Canadian Blood Services in an effort to engage and educate the hockey community about the importance of blood and stem cell donation.

The inspiration for this group came from two separate events; the first being the death of Tom Middleton (father of Stu Middleton, cofounder) and the second being the Humboldt Broncos tragedy. Stu’s father was killed on the Trans-Canada Highway while en route to one his Junior games in 2000. Stu’s teammates and the local hockey community helped him through that difficult time just as Canadians witnessed the hockey community rallying together to help those affected by the accident in Humboldt. In wake of the 2018 tragedy, Hockey Gives Blood set out to build something that is positive, is long-lasting, and is a tool for the hockey community to make a positive impact at every level.

The team is comprised of former players who believe Hockey Gives Blood has the potential to be a leader in sport benevolence. As passionate as they are about hockey, they are just as enthusiastic about this incredible movement!”

After Stu Middleton learned Dayna had signed her organ donor card and began donating blood at a young age, Hockey Gives Blood created the Dayna Brons Honorary Award in May 2019.

“The Dayna Brons Honorary Award recognizes an individual from Canada’s hockey community who exhibits outstanding dedication towards patients who rely on blood and stem cell products in Canada. This person must be deemed to have made a significantly positive impact regarding the awareness and necessity of Canada’s Lifeline.

The ideal candidate would also be one who displays some or all of the attributes Dayna was known for, such as; humility, dedication, sacrifice, work ethic and kindness. As a blood donor herself, Dayna helped to contribute to the 112,000 new donors Canadian Blood Services needs each year. Patients across Canada rely on the kindness of others to ensure they have access to the blood and stem cell products they need to help their fight against over 80 diseases and disorders.

The Canadian hockey landscape is filled with tremendous women and men who currently share similar values and we want to appropriately recognize these individuals in memory of Dayna Brons. It is truly our humble honour to bestow this award on an annual basis and we entrust each recipient will help to ensure the legacy of Dayna Brons is carried on.”

In December 2020, Hockey Gives Blood announced a new partnership with Canada Life Co. and added an $8000 education bursary to be divided amongst three nominees.
